A Strange Irony

Until the car accident caused by a drunk driver, octogenarians Edwin and Ellen Collier led active lives, playing with their grandchildren and regularly bicycling.

That active life changed in a moment because of a drunk driver plowing into the Colliers' vehicle.

Below the fold, read the story of the tragedy of drunk driving with a particular strangeness of coincidence.

From this April 10, 2010 article in the Washington Post:
Md. driver accused of hitting judge who suspended DWI term in 1998

The tragedy of it all was immediately clear: A suspected drunk driver, at 3 in the afternoon, swings his Chevy Tahoe into oncoming traffic.

"He's going to hit us!" Ellen Collier, 81, told her husband, Edwin, 85, who was driving their 2001 Honda Accord.

The strange coincidence took longer to sort out: The Honda's driver, retired Montgomery County District judge Edwin Collier, had presided over thousands of drunken-driving cases, including one in 1998 involving the Tahoe's driver. Collier had spared him jail time, even though the man had been arrested on drinking-and-driving charges twice in three months.

Ellen Collier, who is now 82, suffered a compound leg fracture, fractured ribs, a fractured hip and neck injuries...She has had five operations, including one to fuse vertebrae in her neck, and must use a walker. Edwin Collier, now 86 and who as a retired judge was brought back to hear cases as recently as last year, suffered a broken leg and fractured ribs. He must use a cane.

The diminished mobility forced the couple to move to a retirement community from their home in Bethesda....

Fernandez [the drunk driver] was barely hurt. At the crash scene, he walked about in flip-flops, grinned widely and seemed unconcerned about the Colliers' injuries as other motorists rushed to their aide, according to Montgomery police reports.

Fernandez was tested at more than twice the legal limit for alcohol, the reports say.
The irony of a merciful judge being severely injured by the criminal to whom that judge had shown mercy decades before reminds one of an O. Henry story's final twist, minus any element of a happy ending.

In the case of Judge Collier, some might say, "Justice has been served." I don't feel that way, but, then again, I've never personally known anyone injured by a drunk driver.

I have, however, known several arrested on DUI charges, and nearly each of these individuals received a mere slap on the wrist from the judge when their cases came to court because they hired top-of-the-line attorneys who specialize in resolving DUI's with little or no sentence. And, yes, each of these individuals continue to drink and drive. When arrested again on DUI charges, they hired the same top-of-the-line attorneys and bypassed the legal consequences. A vicious cycle, repeated every day on our highways and byways.

My last call from this jerk came yesterday at mid-morning. I'm hoping that the number is now blocked by Verizon's system.

When I phoned Verizon over the weekend to block the number, the Verizon representative told me that blocking the jerk from calling here at all hours would cost a monthly fee. Pfffft!

Note: Any student in my class has no time to make such phone calls. "Idle hands are the devil's workshop," and all that.

...A VAT is the political class's recourse when the resources of the minority that is targeted by the envious are insufficient to finance ravenous government....

...Adding a VAT without subtracting the income tax would constrict Americans' freedom much more than the health-care legislation does. Because the 16th Amendment will not be repealed, adoption of a VAT would proclaim the impossibility of serious spending reductions and hence would be the obituary for the Founders' vision of limited government.

BHO's Amusement

On April 15 (Ah! The irony!), BHO voiced his amusement with regard to the Tea Parties. Of course, his arrogant and condescending amusement is nothing more than another manifestation of his growing megalomania. He topped off his comment about amusing (a humorous quip in his own mind) with the outrageous statement that Tea Partiers should be thanking him:

Charlie Crist >will have to run as a Democrat-lite (an independent) to even have a chance at winning his battle to become a U.S. senator.

HE is amused by us? We’re the reason it took so long for HIM to get his precious signature – and likely final – achievement accomplished: Obamacare....

Bill Clinton's Ideological Mistake (With Not-To-Be-Missed Addendum)

Did anyone else catch this fundamental error, an error running completely contrary to our Founding principles?

Excerpt from "Bill you are confusing an administration with America":
Former President Bill Clinton warned of a slippery slope from angry anti-government rhetoric to violence like the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, saying "the words we use really do matter."

The two-term Democratic president insisted he wasn't trying to restrict free speech, but in remarks Friday he said incendiary language can be taken the wrong way by some Americans. He drew parallels to words demonizing the government before Oklahoma City.

...[T]he people are the nation, NOT the government....If the government takes steps in law that a substantial portion of the nation feels damages the core purpose of the nation..., then troubles ensue.

...[T]his is just another DESPERATE, DESPERATE attempt to marginalize the people....
Equating in any sense the Tea Parties with Timothy McVeigh is so far over the top as to beggar belief. In essence, Bill Clinton is telling the Tea Partiers, "Shut up! Don't dissent because dissension is dangerous and leads to terrorism. Submit to the will of the government."

America has never stood for the principle that dissent is dangerous in and of itself. If it were, we wouldn't have opposing candidates on our ballots.

The fact is no elected official gives a damn. Hare is not at all unusual; one only needs to observe Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Hairy Reid, or any number of other ‘servants of the people’ to see that members of Congress, of either party, intend to do as they please. Why? Because they count on the fact that Americans have short memories. It was important for Obama/Congress to pass the health care fiasco in March because these legislators realize most voters will forget by the time November arrives. I can prove this, too … how many Americans who vote recall that under this present government, President Obama seized and nationalized the banking industry, the car manufacturing and marketing industry, and the home loan industry?

Honestly, I don’t know what disgusts me more … this Congress, the White House, or the people who elected them.



I couldn't agree more with my good friend Mustang.

Many conservatives are pinning their hopes on the electorate to vote out the current administration in 2010 and 2012. But how long is the memory of the electorate? Not very, in my view. Americans have a way, a sort of optimism, of going to bed at night and expecting to wake up to a better tomorrow. This optimism, a form of apathy, is what got us into this present political mess in the first place.

Here's how the media and our Congress of Criminals are coping with the grassroots movement, "Taxed Enough Already":



What happens when an elected government tries to ignore the will of the people? Below the fold, history provides one answer.


Please read slowly, carefully, and thoughtfully the entire text of the Declaration of Independence:
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. --Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states; for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.

He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.

He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.

He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states:

For cutting off our trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing taxes on us without our consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury:

For transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses:

For abolishing the free system of English laws in a neighboring province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule in these colonies:

For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments:

For suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have we been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.

We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do. Our War for Independence almost two and one-half centuries ago wasn't a revolution. Rather, it was the necessary step for restoring rights which no government should be allowed to usurp.

Of course, England at the time portrayed the colonists' uprising in a different way, much as the media and the BHO administration are portraying the Tea Parties of the Twenty-first Century.

Sarkozy: Obama Is A "Mad Lunatic"



From this article in the European Union Times (hat tip to Gateway Pundit):


A new report circulating in the Kremlin today [April 9] authored by France’s Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) and recently “obtained” by the FSB shockingly quotes French President Nicolas Sarkozy [photo top right with Obama] as stating that President Barack Obama is “a dangerous[ly] aliéné”, which translates into his, Obama, being a “mad lunatic”, or in the American vernacular, “insane”.

According to this report, Sarkozy was “appalled” at Obama’s “vision” of what the World should be under his “guidance” and “amazed” at the American Presidents unwillingness to listen to either “reason” or “logic”. Sarkozy’s meeting where these impressions of Obama were formed took place nearly a fortnight ago at the White House in Washington D.C., and upon his leaving he “scolded” Obama and the US for not listening closely enough to what the rest of the World has to say.

Apparently, as this report details, the animosity between Sarkozy and Obama arose out of how best the West can deal with the growing threat posed by rising Islamic fundamentalism....

CAIR Sues DuPage County, Illinois

For not granting a permit to build an Islamic center:
The Council on American and Islamic Relations sued DuPage County Board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom and several other county officials Thursday over the refusal to grant a permit to build an Islamic learning center.

Alleging violations of the First Amendment (free exercise of religion, speech and assembly), the 14th Amendment (equal protection) and the 2000 Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, Chicago-CAIR is charging that the county unfairly discriminated against the proposed Irshad Learning Center, an Islamic institution...
Not a surprise, really, that CAIR is attempting this.

I can't imagine that CAIR can win this one. But in these days of surreal inversionism, who knows?

It will be used in place of the traditional presidential first pitch, started in 1910 by William Howard Taft, during all such outings in the future, including limo rides with Larry Sinclair.

The Regime chose the machine after seriously debating an alternative plan, having Obama better explain how a first pitch will help the American people understand the game of baseball, during 17-minute, 2,500-word speeches from the mound....

BHO, Congregants, And Easter 2010

Not much makes me gasp anymore. But this blasphemy does. And on the holiest of Christian Holy Days!

I heartily concur with Z's comment over at Infidel Bloggers Alliance:
Oops...I thought he's not attending churches because he creates too much of a diversion? Right? Isn't that the excuse he uses so he doesn't have to attend the churches most American presidents have attended while in DC?
But, the diversion was fine as long as they were praising HIM?
Any decent man with any respect for our God would have stood up and thanked the crowd but asked them to please remember who they're there to worship and to just treat him and his family like the 'normal folks' he likes to refer to himself as.
And as Brooke pointed out in the same comments thread:
Would you not fear the Lord if that occurred in your church? Would you not RUN for the door?
The first of the Ten Commandments, a commandment cast to the side on Easter Sunday in Allan Chapel:
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
This Obama worship will come to no good end.

More Political Malpractice

In Congressman Phil Hare's own words, when it comes to ObamaKare “I don’t worry about the Constitution...":



Democratic Congressman Phil Hare represents Illinois's 17th congressional district. He took office in January 2007 and at that point took the following oath:
"I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."
Obviously, Hare doesn't give a hoot about the oath he took. Did he have his fingers crossed behind his back, or what?

Quoting now my fellow blogger Epa over at Infidel Bloggers Alliance:
This off hand comment is not some GOOF. This is the offhand, unguarded REAL OPERATING FEELING OF RIGHTNESS AND ENTITLEMENT these utter morons work with, and are elected to do.

This guy is not from some downtown, left wing district ...this is farm country and FOLKS WILL DRIVE THIS MORON OUT,,,

THEY
CARE

Do they?
In my view, now that Hare has decided to disregard the Constitution, he should be drummed out of office and into court for oath breaking and, possibly, treason. Now.

In the meantime, as we await the November 2010 elections, each and all the member of Congress as well as the White House need this reminder drummed into their thick skulls:
"Constitutions of civil government are not to be framed upon a calculation of existing exigencies, but upon a combination of these with the probable exigencies of ages, according to the natural and tried course of human affairs. Nothing, therefore, can be more fallacious than to infer the extent of any power, proper to be lodged in the national government, from an estimate of its immediate necessities." --Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 34

The case for private education and homeschooling grows stronger every day.

Good Friday


He died for me.


No thought should be more beautiful to believers!

Long before the Lamb of God died on the cross, Isaiah foretold the significance of what we now refer to as "Good Friday":

Isaiah 53:3-5, 7-10, 12

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; he was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

4 Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was He stricken.

9 And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

12 Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He hath poured out His soul unto death: and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

That mosque produced two 9/11 jihadists, one Ft. Hood mass murderer (Maj. Nidal Hasan worshiped there when he was stationed in the D.C. area) and Imam Anwar al Awlaki ,who emailed back and forth, advising Maj. Hasan and also praised the 1999 valedictorian of the in Alexandria Omar Abu Ali (who is now serving a life sentence for his part in joining Al Qaeda and attempting to assassinate President Bush); Al Awlaki glowingly compared Omar Abu Ali to Rosa Parks.

So, what's going on in your neighborhood with your politicians? Whose fundraisers are your so-called elected representatives attending?

UPDATE: The only one of the politicians who showed up for the fundraiser at the mosque was Gerry Connolly, representative in the U.S. House and former chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Fairfax County. Figures that he would show up. He was the leader of expand the Islamic Saudi Academy a while back.
