About Senator Robert C. Byrd

I don't believe in speaking ill of the dead, but I don't believe in making saints out of the dead, undeservedly either.

And, right now, as Senator Byrd's funeral rites approach, he's being spoken of in glowing terms.

Let's have a reality check on Senator Robert Byrd (hat tip to Feed Your ADHD):

* “They call me 'The Pork King,' they don't know how much I enjoy it.”

* “There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word…”

* “The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia.”

* “It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the Union…”

* “Will you please inform me as to the possibilities of rebuilding the Klan realm of W. Va.”

* “I will never submit to fight beneath that banner with a Negro by my side…”

* “Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again … than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrel … a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

No wonder that the Ku Klux Klan actually suggested way back when that Robert Byrd seek political office.

In 2004, he persuaded Congress to require schools and colleges to teach about the Constitution every Sept. 17, the day the document was adopted in 1787.

Can't argue with the fact that our Constitution should be studied in school; however, that study should take a lot more than one day.

The 2012 Election Strategy?

Recently, journalist Sally Quinn made a serious proposal as to how Obama can finesse getting elected again in 2012. Excerpt from the Washington Post article:

Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden should switch jobs.

Really.

It makes sense for the Democrats, actually....

It would not be out of the question for Clinton and Biden to switch jobs sometime after the midterm elections. After the president announced the switch, majorities in both houses of Congress would have to confirm Clinton to her new position, following the rules laid out in the 25th Amendment. She could then immediately begin campaigning for Obama for 2012, and she would also have at least two years in the White House as vice president to give her unassailable experience, clout and credibility. For his part, Biden would simply need Senate confirmation to get to work in Foggy Bottom.

Of course, the following aspect plays an important part in Ms. Quinn's proposal, although the idea gets only a brief mention in an essay which mostly lauds Hillary Clinton:

...[C]onsider Hillary the Democratic campaigner. She is tireless and relentless. Given the combination of votes that she and Obama got in the 2008 primary campaign, they would be a near-unbeatable team. Clinton also appeals to independents...

Now, we all know that, back in January 2010, Obama, in the face of falling poll numbers, which have continued to fall, has said the following:

“I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president,” he told Diane Sawyer of ABC News. He added: “I don’t want to look back on my time here and say to myself all I was interested in was nurturing my own popularity.”

However, politicians as the power-hungry creatures they are rarely choose to relinquish their offices without a battle.

Furthermore, in the words of Donald Boudreaux:

People who seek political power are, with exceptions too rare to matter, never to be trusted...[W]inning elections requires a measure of deceitfulness and Machiavellian immorality that no decent person comes close to possessing.

In my view, Obama is going to have an uphill battle to win in 2012. But is victory for him out of the question? No. And, although it grieves me to say so, with Hillary on the Democratic Party's ticket, he could maximize his chances for victory. In my view, American voters are among the most gullible people walking the planet and show little discernment when they step into the voting booth.

UPDATE: The only one of the politicians who showed up for the fundraiser at the mosque was Gerry Connolly, representative in the U.S. House and former chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Fairfax County. Figures that he would show up. He was the leader of expand the Islamic Saudi Academy a while back.

We're Stuck With Snollygosters For Leaders

Above is pictured a snollygoster. According to Blasting Caps and Dynamite, a wonderful new blog which I highly recommend that you check out, a snollygoster is defined as follows:

"One, especially a politician, who is guided by personal advantage rather than by consistent, respectable principles."

Because I love word study, I went looking for some more information about snollygosters and found this at The Word Detective:

"Snollygoster" is an American invention, first appearing in print, according to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), in the mid-19th century.

The most likely origin of "snollygoster" is another, very similar, word -- "snallygaster." From the German "schnelle (quick)" plus "geister (spirits)," a "snallygaster" was a mythical monster (a giant reptilian bird, according to one source) said, among residents of Maryland, to attack and eat livestock as well as the occasional child....There is a slight dating problem with this theory, in that "snallygaster" has (according to the OED) first been found in print in 1940 (versus 1846 for its presumptive descendant "snollygoster"), but it's entirely plausible that the "snallygaster" had been used to cow disobedient children for at least 100 years before the word made it into print.

If I weren't graphically challenged, I'd put the faces of certain politicians as the face of the image at the top of this post. I'd create several different snollygosters. We have a plethora of them!

Today's snollygosters on Capitol Hill, in the White House, and throughout this government bureaucracy are eating more than the occasional child. In various ways (Care to name some in the comments section?), this government, filled with snollygasters, is robbing our children of their heritage of freedom and their right to property.

Generational Theft is what this present administration is all about.

Have you ever known anybody who, for whatever reason, didn't pay federal taxes? I have. The result: penalties, interest, seizure of assets, etc. Indeed, I myself got slammed with a penalty last year because I inadvertently underestimated my quarterly payments to Uncle Sam.

But thus saith the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the U.S. Senate (paraphrase): Our tax monies are not being forcibly taken from us. We have a voluntary system, and that is a "fact of the matter."

Huh?

I want my penalty dollars refunded. Now.
